At Roche, we recognize that protecting the privacy of visitors to our websites is very important and that information about your health is particularly sensitive. For this reason, we have taken the necessary steps to comply with data protection requirements worldwide. We treat your personal data in accordance with the “Roche Directive on the Protection of Personal Data” and also in accordance with EU law, the laws of Switzerland and other applicable local laws governing the storage, processing, access and transfer of personal data.

Roche websites that display this Privacy Policy (“Privacy Policy”) and request information in any form from you are required to collect, maintain and secure personal information about you in accordance with this Privacy Policy and applicable laws, rules and regulations. This Privacy Policy applies to personal information collected by Roche’s online resources and communications (such as websites, emails and other online tools) that link to this Privacy Policy. This Privacy Policy does not apply to personal information collected from offline resources and other communications, unless that personal information is merged with personal information collected by Roche online. In addition, this Privacy Policy does not apply to online resources provided by third parties to which Roche’s websites may link and over whose content or privacy practices Roche has no control.

We only collect personal data about you if you provide it to us of your own free will. We do not share your personal information with third parties for their own marketing purposes unless you give us explicit permission to do so. Please read this privacy statement to learn more about how we collect, use, share and protect information online.

Roche uses two different methods of a general nature to collect information from you online:

Data we receive from you

Personally Identifiable Information: You can visit our websites without revealing any personally identifiable information. We may collect your personally identifiable information (such as your name, address, telephone number, email address or other identifying information) only if you freely choose to provide it to us.

Aggregated Data: In some cases, we also anonymize data that you provide to us and maintain it in aggregate form. We may combine this data with other information to create anonymized, aggregated statistical information (e.g., number of visitors, original ISP domain name) that helps us improve our products and services.

Automatically collected data

Together with some third-party vendors we work with, we collect certain types of information in an automated manner when you communicate with us through our websites and via email. The automated technologies and services we use may include, for example, web server logs / IP addresses, cookies, web beacons, and third-party application and content tools.

Web Server Logs / IP Addresses.

An IP address is a number assigned to your computer when you access the Internet. Any computer identification on the Internet is done using the IP address. This allows computers and servers to recognize and communicate with each other. Roche collects IP addresses to perform system administration and to provide aggregate information to affiliates, business partners and/or suppliers for the purpose of performing website analytics and reviewing website performance.

A cookie is a piece of information that is automatically placed on your computer’s hard drive when you access certain websites. The cookie identifies your browser and transmits the information to the server. Cookies allow us to store information on the server to improve the user experience on the web and to perform website analytics and check the performance of websites. Most web browsers are preset to accept cookies. However, you can change your browser settings to not store cookies or to specify when cookies may be sent. Please note, however, that some components of our websites may not function properly if you refuse cookies.

Web Beacons

On certain web pages or in e-mails, Roche may use a commonly used Internet technology called a “web beacon” (also known as an “action tag” or “clear GIF technology”). Web beacons are a tool to analyze the effectiveness of websites. For example, they measure the number of users of a website or how many visitors clicked on certain elements of a website. Web beacons, cookies, and other tracking technologies do not automatically collect personally identifiable information about you. These automatic tracking technologies may only be used to collect more detailed information about your use of the websites and/or interactive emails for the purpose of improving the user experience if you voluntarily provide us with personal information.

On certain Roche websites, we may offer services based on third-party applications and content tools, such as Google Maps or QUARTAL FLIFE. These third parties may collect certain types of data in an automated manner when you communicate with us through our websites using such third party applications and tools.

Your choices

With respect to your use of our websites, you have a choice between several options. For example, you have the choice not to submit personal data by not filling in the relevant forms or data fields on our websites and not using the personalized services offered. If you choose to submit personal data, you have the right to access and correct your data at any time by means of access to the corresponding application. Certain websites may seek your prior consent for certain uses of your information. You may consent or decline to such uses. If you subscribe to certain services or communications, such as an e-newsletter, you may unsubscribe from such services at any time by following the instructions provided in such communications. If you decide to unsubscribe from a service or communication, we will endeavor to delete your corresponding data promptly. However, we may require additional information to do so before we can process your request.

If you are logged into a particular website, you can manage your profile and email preferences within your profile as long as you are logged in with your registered account.

As described above, you can set your browser to generally prevent cookies from being stored, or you can specify when cookies may be sent if you wish to prevent cookies from tracking your browsing behavior on our websites.

Roche uses technology and safeguards, rules and other measures to help protect your personal information from unauthorized access, misuse, disclosure, loss or destruction. To ensure the confidentiality of your information, Roche also uses standard firewalls and password protection. However, it is your personal responsibility to ensure that the computer you use is adequately secured and protected against malware such as Trojan horses, computer viruses and worm programs. You understand that without adequate security measures (e.g., secure web browser configuration, up-to-date anti-virus software, personal firewall software, not using software from questionable sources), there is a risk that the data and passwords you use to protect access to your data may be exposed to unauthorized access by third parties.

Use of data

Roche, including its affiliates, divisions and groups worldwide and/or the companies we engage to perform services on our behalf, will use the personal data you provide to us in your sole discretion to fulfill your requests. We retain control and responsibility over the use of this data. Some of this data may be stored or processed on computers in other countries, such as the United States, whose data protection laws may differ from the data protection laws of the jurisdiction in which you reside. In such cases, we will ensure that appropriate safeguards are in place to ensure that the data processor in that country maintains data protection arrangements that are equivalent to the data protection arrangements in the country in which you reside.

The information provided is used to better understand your needs and how we can improve our products and services.

Exchange and transfer of data

Roche may share personal data with its affiliates and with companies affiliated with Roche. In addition, Roche may share your personal data with trusted business partners in connection with this website and related services. All such companies are required to comply with the terms of this Privacy Policy.

We may also disclose personal data for the following purposes:

(a) in connection with the sale, assignment or other transfer of the business of the website to which the data relates;

  1. b) to comply with requests from authorized governmental institutions or as required by applicable law, court order or governmental regulation; or

  1. c) if this is necessary for the purposes of auditing companies or to investigate or respond to complaints or threats to security.

No use of your data for direct marketing purposes by third parties

We do not sell or transfer your personally identifiable information that you provide to us through our websites to third parties for direct marketing purposes unless we specifically tell you and have received your explicit consent to share your information in this way.

Sending e-mails to friends or colleagues

On some Roche websites, you have the option to send friends or colleagues a link or message that refers to a Roche website. Friends’ e-mail addresses that you provide will be used to send information to your friends on your behalf and will not be collected by Roche or other third parties for any other purpose.

Plug-ins from social networks

This website may include plug-ins from social networks (e.g., Facebook’s “Like” button or the “Share on Twitter” button) to allow you to easily share information with others. When you visit our website, the operator of the social network plug-in may place a cookie on your computer. This allows this operator to recognize people who have previously visited our website. If you are logged into the website of a social network (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Google+) at the same time as browsing our website, the social network plug-ins allow information to be obtained about the fact that you have visited our website. The social network plug-ins further allow the social network website to share information about your activity on our website with other users of their social network website. For example, Facebook’s social network plug-ins allow your Likes and comments made on our websites to be displayed to your friends on Facebook. Facebook’s social network plug-ins also allow you to see your friends’ Facebook activity on our website. Roche has no control over the content of these social network plug-ins. For more information about the social network plug-ins of other social network websites, please refer to the privacy statements of the respective websites.

Google Analytics

Roche’s websites may use Google Analytics, a web analytics service provided by Google, Inc. (“Google”). Google Analytics uses cookies, which are text files placed on your computer, to help the website analyze how users use the site. The information generated by cookies about the use of the website (including your IP address) will be transmitted to and stored by Google on servers in the United States. Google uses this information for the purpose of evaluating your use of the website, compiling reports on website activity for website operators and providing other services relating to website activity and internet usage. Google may also transfer this information to third parties where required to do so by law, or where such third parties process the information on Google’s behalf. Google will not associate your IP address with any other data held by Google. You can refuse the use of cookies by selecting the appropriate settings on your browser software. However, as mentioned above, please note that if you do this you may not be able to use the full functionality of a Roche website. By using a Roche website, you consent to the processing of your personal data in the manner and for the purposes set out above.

Links to other websites

Our websites contain links to other websites that may provide useful information to our visitors. This privacy policy does not apply to such websites. We encourage you to communicate directly with those websites for information about their privacy policies.

Privacy Policy for Children

Our websites are intended for an adult audience. We do not collect personally identifiable information from individuals known to us to be under the age of 13 without first obtaining verifiable consent from the child’s legal guardian. The legal representative has the right, upon request, to review the information provided by the child and/or to request that such information be deleted.

Additional information on websites

If a particular website has special data protection provisions that differ from the data protection provisions stated here, these provisions will be disclosed to you on the website on which personal data is collected.
